What is New
Romanians and Bulgarians celebrated the most historic moment for their countries
Romanians and Bulgarians celebrated the most historic moment for their countries since they overthrew communism in 1989, marking their entry into the European Union with festivities that added doses of pride and hope to the usual New Year's revelry.
In Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, an equally large crowd inundated Batenberg Square for a similar celebration featuring fireworks, rock music and flag waving. Georgi Parnanov, Bulgaria's president, called the night "among the most important dates in Bulgaria's history".
Bulgaria business property transactions top 0.5 bln euro in '06
Over 1.5 bln euro will be invested in the development of business properties in Bulgaria in the next 1-2 years. The top deals for 2006 were the transaction involving office property Business Park Sofia and 3 shopping malls, 2 in Sofia and one in Veliko Tarnovo.
Specialists estimate that the value of transacted business properties - offices, warehouses, production sites, commercial centers, hotels, entertainment venues, holiday vacation villages and land, reached 570 mln euro in 2006 versus 215 mln euro a year earlier.
The Great Brit Switch
Quest Bulgaria, the country's leading English language monthly magazine, reports daily phone calls to their offices from the UK about resettling. Managaing Director of Quest Bulgaria, Chris Goodall said: "We know people in the UK are worried about the possibility of huge numbers of Bulgarians going to the UK after they join the EU. But the number coming the other way is quite significant. "We get numerous phone calls every day from Brits asking how to go about making a new life in Bulgaria. To make more cash they are looking at setting up a business. You buy a house and land for about £50,000 and run the business from home", he added. "Less investment and more profit is what people are looking for and even a third of what you would make in the UK is more than enough to live like a king in Bulgaria. "Brits have set up in bed and breakfasts, antiques, holistic healing centres, an architectural salvage business and even sausage making. "Bulgaria is not a mature market like France and Spain but there are endless opportunities as there were in Europe many years ago."
